Now that I am full time into couponing I have wondered if Costco is worth the membership price. When does it make sense to buy in bulk at Costco (only using their coupons since they will not accept manufacture coupons) or just shop the sales with my coupons? Also Costco put out coupons you can use March 16-April 5. Here are the match-ups using those coupons & current prices as of 3/26/09. Here is the list of items that I have found are cheaper to buy at Costco (most items it is better just to use coupons & stock up). When figuring these prices I took the lowest per unit price. Ex: Beef Jerky is on sale at Smith's for $4.99 for 4 oz. or $1.25 an ounce. Costco per ounce price is $.53. I used to think that I was saving so much money by shopping at Costco. I now realize that by taking the time to use the Grocerysmarts website each week and matching up coupons that I can save so much money!

I buy a lot of milk 8 gallons a week. The last time I went(3/18/09) they had fat free $3.15 for 2 and $3.83 for whole milk (2). It even dipped down to 2.99 in Feb for Non fat milk! The other item I buy a lot of is Cheese. I got Frigo mozarella cheese 3.49 for 2lbs and shredded cheddar cheese was 9.89 for 5lbs. Butter 5.65 for 3lbs. Honey is 6lbs for 10.99. Skippy peanut butter 7.99 for 6lbs. Eggs 5 dozen for 5.69. These are staples for my family. These items fluctuate in price but are have been lower than in grocery stores.
A word to the wise, I love my Costco membership, but recently I have been noticing that the coupons going out are for things that are going up in price. So, make sure you are always checking your receipts to make sure you are still getting your best deal. We were getting organic milk there because it was the cheapest, but the last time we went, it went up a dollar, and since last Nov., our dog food has gone up $2.00. Paper towels, toilet paper, diapers, and meats are some of the other things that have gone up. Just be aware... :)
