When bad things happen to good couponers...

Today I went to Target armed with coupons and the match-ups Jennifer provided here earlier in the week. However I ran into trouble during check-out. I know everybody reading this has had this happen at least one time or another, so know you are not alone!

The cashier, a lovely lady, informed me that they were only allowed to take three coupons for any item, i.e. three deodorants with three coupons. I questioned this so we called over an Assistant Manager. She checked with another AM who also verified that yes, this was their policy. However this seemingly did not apply to Sunday newspaper coupons (I bought four VitaminWater) only the printables from Coupons.com and Target.com. I graciously acquiesced (What else can you do? Don't throw a fit readers, it's beneath you) and while we were checking out (and removing the extra quantities from my transaction - I'm not paying full price for something!) another AM came by and started chiding the cashier and current AM, telling them is was only ONE coupon/item match-up. Luckily this didn't hold water and I checked out with my three deodorants, three Cheetos, etc. (you get the idea).

I decided to come home and check the Target coupon policy (which we have posted on The Budgeteer sidebar). It does mention that Target leaves quantity limitation up to manager discretion per store, so it seems that in this case management was right in their ability to say I could only buy three. I decided to call and speak with somebody at Target and after a genteel conversation discovered that according to Target policy, limiting me to three items was allowed and that this policy would fluctuate amongst stores and managers.

I wanted to share my story with you for two reasons: 1) so you know that you are not the only one it happens to (when it happens to you) and 2) so that you can feel empowered to question what is happening in a nice manner. When I go to the store it is with two little ones in tow, which needless to say is not always the smoothest way to shop so knowing the coupon policy, being organized, and being able to check-out smoothly is essential. Days like this will inevitably happen, but I will do what I can to ensure they do not happen a second time. Arm yourself with knowledge - and a smile on your face.

I went to Target and Tried to use the target coupon for the fruit snack and cheetos and was told that it was only for the bigger size. I questioned them because it says no where on the coupon what size you must buy. They didn't care and I left without my fun goodies. I guess they can do that too. (I have not yet tried again at another store)

This same thing happened to me except I didn't have more than 3 but the "trainer" brought me to the CS desk and went through my entire order matching up my coupons to items. He said that he needed to make sure I had the right coupons. 20 minutes later he wouldnt accept 4 of my coupons because his machine beeped and I let them keep those items. He was not very nice at all.

2 days ago I went to a different Target and the girl said the same thing about using only 1 target coupon but scanned them anyway.
