Unusual topic here at The Budgeteer I suppose, but I wanted to put it out into the world somehow. Unbeknowst to me, I have been successfully compiling playdough recipes under my Yahoo! Bookmarks feature. When I went today to have a quick glance at what ideas I had been hoarding away I was struck by the number of playdough recipes sitting there. So I thought, why not share them with you? I can't be the only one with small children with short attention spans, and a full kitchen pantry full of random odds and ends. I will say I have not tried them all, but somewhere someone has - otherwise I am sure they wouldn't think the recipe was worth posting. Let me know if you have any success with them, OK?
Fruity Play Dough (courtesy of The MotherLoad)
1 cup flour
1 package Kool-Aid (any flavor)
1 tablespoon cream of tartar
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1/4 cup salt
3/4 cup boiling water (the original recipe called for one cup of boiling water, but I found it made the dough too loose- aim for 3/4 cup and add more if needed)
Mix all dry ingredients in bowl then oil, then pour boiling water in and mix thoroughly. Wrap in cellophane or air tight container and store in fridge. The play dough should last a few months.
Oatmeal Playdough (courtesy of Mom's Marbles)
2 cups dry oatmeal
1 cup flour
1 cup water
Mix all ingredients in a large bowl. Turn it out onto an easy-clean tabletop (or placemat, or onto a cookie tray to contain the mess). Knead it, squish it, roll it, play in it.
Chocolate Playdough (courtesy of A Foothill Home Companion)
1 1/4 cup flour
1/2 cup cocoa powder
1/2 cup salt
1/2 tablespoon cream of tartar
1 1/2 tablespoon oil
1 cup water
Mix dry ingredients in a medium size pot. Add wet ingredients and stir together over low heat until a ball of dough forms. Remove play dough from pot and knead by hand until dough is smooth and evenly colored. Store in airtight container.
