Out With the Old, In With the New

For the past year and a half, I have enjoyed sharing some of the best deals with you. When Jennifer joined me this past summer we were committed to keeping you up to speed on the best ways for you to save money.

Alot has changed for us during this time, most notably a new baby for me and out-of-state move for Jennifer. Through it all we thought of our readers, even as our posts dwindled and our time to blog shrunk even further.

As 2010 is hours away, Jennifer and I have decided to put aside any wonderings about our future at The Budgeteer and bring in the New Year with some resolutions: focus on our families. With six very young children between us and husbands who have been patient for our money-saving obsession, and we feel it is time to focus on them. I miss the art of homemaking and I know in the blink of an eye my girls will be all grown up. It is time I turn my attention elsewhere.

From time to time there may be some deal so hot we can't help but make a note of it here, so I suggest you add The Budgeteer to a reader service (like My Yahoo or Google Reader, my favorite) or subscribe via email so that you still get tips on the latest ways to help your family save money.

In the meantime, we have compiled a list of our favorite money-saving spots that we ourselves check on a regular basis to scope out the latest deals. I would suggest you also add these blogs to your reader service and you will never miss another thing.

:: Vons has an already excellent promotion running on Kellogg's cereal this week. Here's someone's post on what else she scored at her supermarket, giving me some ideas on how to work my coupons. One of the coupons is a Target printable for $5/4, but it is a manufacturer coupons. I used this coupon at Smiths last week and I know it works.

:: Hot deal on Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure DVD. I ordered mine last week using the eBillMe that Jennifer wrote about, so I am all set, but this is an awesome price.

:: Get $.25 vegetables at Target this week.

:: $3/1 EPT pregnancy test coupon. Last week they had a $5 coupon (!) that I failed to print in time. No I am not in need of one right now, but if any of you has ever had to pay full price at the store I bet you choked at the check-out. I know I do. So I plan on snagging a few while the deal is around and save them for future need. I hear they have the single tests priced around $3 at Wal-Mart and I know for a fact that the 3-pack digital EPT tests are around $5.50 (since I looked the other day to see how much they would cost if I had the $5 coupon).

:: Nivea Body Wash will be on sale next week at CVS. Print your $2 coupon now and save it until then, getting it free (in fact you will make money!)

:: Hallmark has been doing an awesome promo this month with multiple $5 off your purchase of $5 or more coupons popping up in magazines and even a printable coupon. The coupon expires on Christmas Eve, so you still have time. I have used over 6 coupons I think by now and scored some good stuff. Hallmark has their wrapping paper Buy 1 at $4.99, get one for $.99. With tax and coupon you will pay $1.76 for two rolls! Better than after-Christmas sales, right? On my last trip I bought one roll of non-Christmas paper and a bow so my total with coupon and tax was $.71! I'm all stocked up now.

I can't believe that Target once again has decided to change their Price Match Policy! Now basically their new Low Priced Promise Guarantee states that Target coupons won't really be allowed during price matching. Wow Thanks Target for having no idea about consistency.

This is the new wording:

Target Coupons:
Target coupons will be applied before the price match is made. If the competitor price is still lower than the price after the Target coupon has been deducted, the ad match can be adjusted to match the competitor's price.

Combining both a Target and Manufacturer Coupons:

I just got done reading The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey. I think that everyone should read the book. Basically it goes through how to pay off all your debt & never use credit again. Even if you choose not to use everything in the book I LOVE his budgeting worksheets. I checked the book out from the library but at some point would like to own the book.

For the holiday season all of Dave Ramsey's books, cds, dvds, etc are $10 on his website, www.daveramsey.com. that's 50-70% off great financial advice.

I know of some families that give the book as a gift & then get together to discuss it. What a wonderful gift to help give back financial freedom.

PS- At this point in my life I am choosing not to do everything that he suggests but it is one of the best financial books I have ever read... and I have read quite a few.

PLEASE print at least one of these to keep in your binder. I would suggest printing a few in case you want to leave one with a checker who wasn’t aware of their policy.

Very often, you know more about their coupon policy and the Corporate Office is great about setting their checkers straight.

Breaking news: Maclaren plans to recall 1 million strollers---all its production between 1999 and 2009---after receiving 12 reports of hinges on the stroller that amputated children's fingertips. The company will send out a cover for the hinges to all owners.

The CPSC and Maclaren will issue a press release in the recall this Tuesday; Maclaren began notifying its dealers of the recall in the past couple of days.

Here is the take-home message until the recall is official:

Grocery Lists this Week

If you haven't had a stock-up shopping trip in a long time, this week may be your week! Both Albertsons and Smiths are running some hefty sales, PLEASE check out the Grocery Smarts lists, ok??

The sale at Smiths will take off your savings instantly at checkout, so it will very easy to make sure you get the right price (most of the items they had last week they are continuing with this week). The sale at Albertsons is a but trickier - save $15 off your next shopping trip (three $5 coupons will print out) when you spend $30 AFTER coupons and tax. Grrr... I tried it this morning and I had to spend the $30 after coupons in order to get the catalinas.

OK so that little detail may trip you up a bit, BUT the good news is that with the Grocery Smarts lists, the bottom line price is on the right side, so just add that price up and make sure you hit $30 before heading to the store. Save yourself LOTS of frustration.

Also, it seems that some the printable coupon match-ups that the listmakers work so hard to get right switched on us overnight (the coupons which were there on Tuesday are no longer there today) so if you are having trouble finding them, you aren't blind. They might now be there. Take a deep breath and crack open your coupon binder instead.

I am eyeballing the Huggies boxes though - you can't beat the price after catalinas. If you need diapers, head to Albertsons!

What? Watching Baby Einstein DVDs won't make my child a genius?? I'm sorry, I have just have to laugh over this hulabaloo, but might take advantage of it myself.

Seems that the Walt Disney Company is now offering refunds for all those Baby Einstein videos. The current offer allows parents to exchange their video for a different title, receive a discount coupon, or get $15.99 each for up to four returned DVDs (bought between June 5, 2004, and Sept. 5, 2009), requires no receipt, and extends until next March 10, 2010.

This week Walgreens has Zantac on sale for $8.99 with $8.99 in Register Rewards, making it free. To make it even better, here is a $5.00 coupon for Zantac, which means this deal becomes a moneymaker!

And don't forget about the Triaminc deal while you are there. Buy three bottles for $14.97, use two coupons from 10/18 SS in Sunday's paper for $1.50/1 and $3.00/2 bottles. Spend $10.47 + tax, get $8 Register Reward, making it less than $1 per bottle.

If you combine the two deals the overage on the Zantac will cover the cost of the Triaminic. You would spend $14.46 + tax and get almost $17 back in Register Rewards! Ways to Save Money on Gas Bill

Thanks to Utah Deal Diva for this great reminder on how to lower your gas bill. Here are a couple of my favorite for all the tips see her post.

Also I also have heard about venting your clothes dryer inside to capture the heat. From what I have read it isn't a good idea because: 1. A home is not made to have a gallon of water added to the humitity in the home. It can cause mold, mildew & other nasty stuff. 2. Even with the best lint trap you will still have particles in the air. Not a good thing to breath plus you would have a layer of lint everywhere. Here are some great ideas.

Change the air filters in your home for adequate air flow when the heater is on.

After you use the oven, leave the door open. Make use of that heat that would otherwise be wasted. Obviously make sure the oven is turned off and kids are safely kept away if you do this!

Don't heat areas of your house you don't use regularly. Close heating vents or turn back thermostats in those areas and close the doors for a painless reduction in heating costs. Also, if you're like us and have only 1 thermostat in a 2-story home, close some of the upstairs vents to direct the heated air to the downstairs, making the temperature of your home more uniform.

Use a programmable thermostat and be mindful of what you're setting it at. 68 to 70 degrees while you're home and awake, and 60 to 65 degrees while you're asleep or not at home are reasonable temperatures. Setting it too low at night isn't a good idea because it will make your furnace work overtime to compensate when it kicks on. Also, if 68-70 degrees sounds too low for you, I encourage you to try it for a week or two. There's nothing wrong with wearing a sweater at home and it's amazing how quickly you acclimate to the lower temps.

The $3/1 Kroger Comforts diaper coupon is back! It's been gone for a little while so I was worried the days of buying diapers for $3.49 per package might be over with.

I have tried these diapers & they aren't my favorite for the price it is worth it to me to buy them. They have a plastic feel unlike the pampers & huggies plus there is a little urine smell. The did contain pretty well so definitely worth using around the house.

Remember that you can freeze cheese. So stock up if you're able to score a sweet deal and then stick some in the freezer to use later. I personally have found that pre-shredded cheese freezes better than block cheese. So you can either buy it pre-shredded or shred it yourself before freezing.

Vons Coupon Questions

Recently someone posted on Pinching Your Pennies about a confusing shopping experience they had at their local Vons, where the cashier would not accept black and white printable coupons. I told her I would look into it and today I spoke to my local Vons manager.

First let me say that I am a huge fan of the customer service I receive at Vons. I am never afraid to ask for help or to seek answers to my questions. Today I was told that they are moving to a policy where they will only accept two printable coupons per item due to coupon fraud. He showed me the fraudulent coupons, which they post at customer service and just with a quick glance I could tell they were fakes. $4.00 off Quaker Oatmeal and lots of free products. Sketchy.

Anyway, he did say in the end it was manager's discretion (similar to the story we hear from Target) but at least we know what the policy is and why.

Also, I decided to look into coupon usage and Vons home delivery. You can not use coupons with home delivery, darn it.
